Swapping an existing fan for a new one — though what's above the old one still needs checking. Plenty of older fans were hung from boxes that weren't rated for them, and the box has been quietly working loose ever since.
New fans aren't all the same weight as old ones either. A heavy light kit or large motor housing puts more on the support than the unit it replaces. If the old fan wobbled, assume the mounting is part of the reason.
And the one where the box almost always has to be replaced, because a light fixture box was never built to carry a fan. Switching is the other decision here — a single existing switch limits what you can control without additional wiring.
New wiring run from a suitable circuit, a fan-rated box anchored properly, and a switch. Access determines the cost — an attic above with room to work is straightforward; a ceiling with a finished floor above it, or a joist running the wrong way, is not. Permits generally apply where a new circuit is involved.

Why a light fixture box won't do
They're designed to hold a static load — a fixture that hangs and does nothing. A fan is heavier and it moves, applying rotational force and continuous vibration to that box every hour it runs.
A fan-rated box is a different product, anchored either directly to a joist or carried on a brace bar that spans between joists and transfers the load into the structure rather than into the drywall.
Mounting a fan on a standard fixture box is the classic error in this trade, and its danger is that it doesn't fail immediately. It works loose over months of vibration, and by the time anyone notices, the fan is being held by hardware that was never asked to do the job.
You often can't tell from below. Rated and unrated boxes look similar once trimmed out. Checking is part of every install we do — and if it needs replacing, that's in the quote before we start.

What you can control is set by what's already in the wall.
Never run a fan motor from a standard lighting dimmer. It causes humming, overheating, and shortened motor life. Fans need a proper fan speed control, or the control built into the fan. If an existing fan hums on low, this is the first thing to check.
Before you buy
Sizing, height, and clearance
- Blade span. Bedrooms and offices generally suit spans around 42 to 52 inches; large living and open-plan spaces often want 52 inches or more. Long rooms sometimes work better with two smaller fans than one large one.
- Ceiling height. Low ceilings — under roughly eight feet — usually need a flush or hugger mount, since blades generally want around seven feet of clearance above the floor. High ceilings need a longer downrod, because a fan mounted tight to a twelve-foot ceiling moves air nobody can feel.
- Clearance. Blades need room from walls, beams, sloped surfaces, and light fixtures.
- Position. Centred over the space you use rather than necessarily the room, and clear of door swings.

If it wobbles or hums later
- Wobble usually traces to a mount that isn't tight or level, mismatched or bent blades, or dust built up unevenly. A fan that has newly developed a wobble deserves a proper look, because the other possibility is the box working loose from the structure.
- Humming on low is very often a fan running from a lighting dimmer rather than a fan speed control — which is a motor problem, not just a noise problem.
- Working on some speeds only points to the speed control, the capacitor, or the wiring at the switch.
- New noise over time can be dry bearings, loose blade screws, or accumulated dust.

Getting the airflow right
- Fans cool people, not rooms. A fan doesn't lower air temperature — it moves air across skin. Running one in an empty room does nothing but consume power.
- Use the reversing switch. In warm weather, blades turning counterclockwise viewed from below push air down for the cooling draught. In cold weather, clockwise on low pulls air up and eases warm air off the ceiling back down the walls — noticeably useful with high ceilings.
- Pair it with the thermostat. A fan makes a room feel cooler, which is where the cooling cost savings actually come from.
- Clean the blades. Uneven dust is a genuine and common cause of wobble.
