Start with scope: how much stopped working?
Each answer points somewhere different, and each carries different urgency. Work out which one you're in before you call.
A single outlet or switch dead, everything else on that circuit fine. The fault is usually at that device — worn contacts, a loose termination in its box, or a device that's simply reached the end of its life.
A group of outlets or a whole room out while the rest of the property is fine. The failure is at a connection upstream of the dead ones, and the box it's in usually looks entirely normal from the outside. Or it's a tripped GFCI protecting the run.
More than one breaker's worth of the property affected. That points toward the panel — a failed main, a loose termination on a bus or neutral bar, or a breaker that's gone.
Check the neighbours and your utility's outage map before anything else. A dark street is a utility problem. If it's only you, look at the main breaker — and if the main is fine and the property is dead, that's a service-side fault.
Some rooms working, others not — especially with lights brightening in one area while dimming in another. Treat that as urgent. It often indicates a lost neutral, which can put over-voltage on circuits and damage equipment while everything appears to be running.

Root causes
What causes them
- Loose terminations. The most common cause by a distance, particularly conductors pushed into the spring-clip holes on the back of devices rather than secured under screw terminals. Faster to install, far more likely to fail years later under heat and thermal cycling.
- Worn devices. Receptacles and switches are mechanical and have a service life. In a property with original devices, some are simply finished.
- Overloaded circuits. Rooms change use. A bedroom becomes an office; a garage becomes a workshop; the wiring didn't change with it.
- Damaged conductors. Fasteners driven through cable during other work, rodent damage in attics, and cable crushed behind fixtures.
- Water ingress. Leaks reaching boxes and fixtures corrode connections and create fault paths.
- Aluminum branch connections. Expansion and contraction loosen terminations, which then heat.
- Previous unpermitted work. Undersized conductors, missing boxes, unsecured splices, reversed polarity, grounds left unconnected. Invisible until something stops working.

The honest limit
When it isn't a repair
- Recurring faults in different places on the same system point to the installation method or the wiring itself, not to any individual connection.
- A panel that's full, obsolete, or a known-problem type limits what chasing faults around it can achieve.
- Wiring at end of life — brittle insulation, extensive knob and tube, damage throughout — costs more in repeated repairs over a few years than doing it once.

My bathroom outlet is dead but no breaker has tripped.
Check every GFCI in the property — garage, basement, exterior, laundry. One GFCI often protects outlets in several rooms, and a reset frequently solves it.
Several outlets died at once. Why?
Receptacles are usually daisy-chained, so a failed connection at one box kills everything downstream while that box looks perfectly normal. A tripped GFCI does the same thing, sometimes across rooms.

Can I put three-prong outlets in place of my two-prong ones?

I have aluminum wiring. Is that a problem?
The terminations are the weak point rather than the conductors. Approved remediation exists; whether it suits depends on condition and sometimes your insurer.
