The likely cause
A lost or open neutral — a failed neutral connection at the panel or in the service. Without a solid neutral, voltage stops dividing evenly between circuits, and some circuits receive more than they should.

Electricity generates heat wherever it meets resistance. A properly made connection has almost none.

A connection works loose

Through vibration, thermal cycling, or being pushed into a spring clip rather than tightened under a screw. Now it has resistance.

Heat degrades the insulation
