These are the ones that cause deaths and injuries every storm season.

  1. Never run it indoors, in a garage, in a carport, or in a shed — even with the door wide open. Portable generators produce carbon monoxide in quantities that can be lethal quickly, and enclosed or partly enclosed spaces accumulate it. Run it outdoors, well away from the building — at least 20 feet is commonly advised — with exhaust pointed away from windows, doors, and vents. Keep working CO alarms inside the house.
  2. Never plug it into a wall outlet to power the house. Backfeeding pushes electricity out onto utility lines and can kill the crews restoring your power. It also bypasses your protection. Connect appliances directly, or install a transfer switch or interlock.
  3. Shut it down and let it cool before refuelling. Petrol on a hot engine is a fire.

Not with the generator catalogue.

Almost always essential

Refrigerator and freezer, heating system controls and blower (a gas furnace needs very little power to run, but it needs it), sump pump if you have one, well pump if you're not on municipal water, a handful of lighting circuits, and outlets for phones and devices.

Often essential

Internet and networking equipment, garage door opener, medical equipment, a circuit for a home office, and security systems.

Usually optional

Central air conditioning, electric range and oven, electric water heating, clothes dryer, EV charging. These are the big consumers, and including them is what drives generator size — and cost — upward sharply.

Worth knowing: many standby systems can include load management, which sheds or staggers large loads automatically. That lets a smaller generator serve a whole panel by never running the range and the air conditioning simultaneously — frequently allowing a meaningfully smaller unit for the same practical experience.

Motor starting matters too. Well pumps, sump pumps, air conditioners, and refrigeration compressors draw far more current for a moment at start-up than they do running. A generator sized only on running loads will stall on the first pump start. This is where undersized systems fail, and it's why sizing is a calculation rather than a rule of thumb.

Before you buy

What a generator won't do

  • It won't power everything, unless you pay for that. Whole-house capability means a much larger unit and, on propane, a much larger tank.
  • It won't be instant. Automatic standby systems take several seconds to detect an outage, start, and transfer. Computers, servers, and anything that can't tolerate a brief interruption still need a UPS between the outlet and the equipment.
  • It won't run forever. On natural gas, as long as supply holds. On propane or petrol, until the fuel runs out — and during a regional outage everyone else is queuing for fuel too.
  • It won't look after itself. Standby units need their exercise cycle and annual servicing. A generator that hasn't been maintained is a generator that doesn't start, which is worse than not having one.
  • It won't be silent. Quieter than a portable, but audible — including during weekly or monthly self-tests.

The critical equipment

A generator must never be able to feed your house and the utility grid simultaneously. That separation is the entire purpose of this equipment.

An interlock kit A mechanical plate fitted to your panel that makes it physically impossible for the main breaker and the generator breaker to be on at the same time. Where a listed kit exists for your panel, it's usually the least expensive compliant option — and it can feed any circuit in the panel rather than a fixed selection.
A manual transfer switch Performs the same disconnection with a dedicated switch, typically feeding a set list of circuits. You start the generator and operate it by hand.
An automatic transfer switch Senses the outage, starts the generator, transfers the load, and reverses everything when utility power returns. Nobody has to be home.

Backfeeding provides none of this A cord from a generator into a wall socket energises your household wiring and, through your service, the lines outside. It's how utility crews get killed during restoration, it's illegal in most jurisdictions, and it isn't something we'll install around.

Fuel

What each fuel means day to day

Natural gas

No refuelling, no storage, no run-time limit while supply holds. Requires an adequately sized gas line — a generator is a large appliance and existing piping is frequently undersized for it, which is one of the more common add-on costs. Units typically produce slightly less output on natural gas than on propane.

Propane

Stores well and works without gas service. Tank size sets your run time, so size it for the outage you're actually preparing for — during a regional event, refills are competitive.

Diesel

Common in larger and commercial installations. Storage, periodic fuel turnover, and cold-weather handling all need managing.

Petrol

Portables only. Convenient, but stores poorly without stabiliser, requires you to be present, and means keeping fuel on the property safely.

Fuel choice usually follows what's already at the property. Where there's a genuine choice, it's a trade between refuelling hassle and installation cost.

Position

Placement, clearances, and noise

  • Clearances are not negotiable. Standby units have manufacturer-specified minimum distances from the building, and code plus local rules add requirements around windows, doors, and air intakes — because exhaust must not find its way indoors.
  • Property line setbacks apply in many municipalities, and some have noise ordinances affecting placement or permitted exercise times.
  • Noise and the exercise cycle. Standby units run a scheduled self-test weekly or monthly. Placement relative to your own bedrooms and your neighbours' windows is worth deciding before the pad is poured, not after the first Sunday morning test.
  • HOA and strata rules often govern placement, screening, and sometimes whether generators are permitted at all. Check before ordering equipment.
  • The pad. A level base — concrete or manufactured composite — with service access around it.

  • Let it exercise. The scheduled self-test keeps the engine and battery healthy. Don't disable it because it's noisy — move the schedule instead.
  • The battery is the number one failure point. Standby generators start on a battery, and a flat battery means no start regardless of how much fuel is in the tank.
  • Service annually or per the manufacturer's interval — oil, filters, inspection.
