What each protection actually does

These protect against different things. Knowing which is which is what stops protection reading as an upsell.

GFCI Protects people
Ground fault circuit interrupter. Monitors the current flowing out against the current returning. If some is escaping — through water, through a damaged appliance, through a person — it cuts power in a fraction of a second. This protects against shock, which is why it belongs anywhere water is present.
AFCI Protects the building
Arc fault circuit interrupter. Detects the erratic electrical signature of arcing from a damaged conductor or a loose connection inside a wall. Arcing generates intense localised heat and is a leading cause of electrical fires. That's why living areas need it even though there's no water involved.
Tamper-resistant Protects children
Internal shutters that block foreign objects while accepting a normal plug. Mechanical rather than electrical protection, aimed squarely at small children.
Weather-resistant Survives exposure
Built to survive outdoor conditions — corrosion resistance and materials rated for exposure. A standard receptacle in an exterior box degrades and eventually fails, often as a fault rather than quietly.

Dual-function devices provide both GFCI and AFCI in one receptacle or breaker, and a device can be more than one of these. What your location needs is the starting point, not an upsell.

KitchensCounter receptacles require GFCI protection, and kitchens generally need dedicated circuits for the major appliances. Island and peninsula outlets have their own placement considerations depending on cabinetry.
BathroomsGFCI protection is mandatory, and position relative to the sink and tub matters. Many older bathrooms have a single ungrounded outlet or none at all.
Laundry roomsGFCI protection, plus dedicated circuits for washer and dryer.
Garages and workshopsGFCI protection, receptacles at working height rather than at floor level, 20-amp circuits where power tools are involved, and often 240-volt provision.

It produces an outlet that looks grounded and isn't — so every device plugged in, and everyone using it, relies on protection that doesn't exist. It's worse than the two-prong outlet it replaced, which at least advertised the situation honestly.

The legitimate options:

  1. Run a ground to that location. Best outcome where it's practical.
  2. Install GFCI protection and label the outlets accordingly. A recognised approach for ungrounded circuits in many jurisdictions — GFCI provides shock protection without a ground, and the outlets must be labelled as ungrounded. Worth knowing that sensitive electronics still lack the grounded reference they expect.
  3. Rewire the circuit, where the wiring is at end of life anyway.

Which job is it

Adding versus replacing

Replacing an existing device is straightforward and inexpensive. Worn receptacles that no longer grip a plug, tired switches, cracked plates.

Adding a new outlet depends on where the power comes from. Extending a nearby circuit that has capacity is the cheapest route. Where the nearby circuit is already loaded, or the location or load calls for a dedicated circuit, a new run from the panel is required — which costs meaningfully more but is the correct answer. Occasionally the panel has no space and that has to be addressed first.

Why termination quality matters

The device is the visible part. What determines whether it's still working in fifteen years is how the conductors were connected.

Push-in connections — conductors inserted into spring clips on the back of a device — rely on a small spring maintaining contact under years of heating and cooling as the circuit loads and unloads. They're faster to install, and they're what we find behind a large share of intermittent and dead circuits.

Screw terminations clamp the conductor mechanically. They take longer and they hold.

A loose connection generates heat, and heat degrades the insulation around it, which is the beginning of a longer problem. That's why a receptacle that no longer grips a plug is worth replacing rather than tolerating — the loose grip is a heating connection.

Can I replace my two-prong outlets with three-prong?

What's the difference between GFCI and AFCI?
